Strong Second Half Pushes Wingate Past Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's basketball team fell to the Wingate University Bulldogs on Wednesday evening (Jan. 4) in a South Atlantic Conference matchup by a score of 99-84.

Both sides went back and forth in the opening half, with Wingate holding a six-point lead after the opening five minutes. However, it was Coker closing the gap and tying the game up at 19-19 at the under 12-minute media timeout. The Cobras continued to ride the wave of momentum, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-5 over the next three minutes to take a 30-24 lead at the 8:38 mark. Wingate showed some fight over the next seven minutes, outscoring Coker 17-11 and tying the contest up at 41 with 1:36 left in the first half. The Cobras edged the Bulldogs by one over the final 90 seconds to take a 46-45 lead into the locker rooms at the half.

The second half would be all Wingate, outscoring the Cobras 54-38 in the final 20 minutes, while shooting just over 57 percent as a team.

JaQuez Motley led the way with 19 points and five assists. Nathan Lemke logged his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Jalal Abdul-Azeez finished with 12 points to round out the double-digit scoring for Coker.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they travel to Mars Hill University to face the Lions in a SAC matchup. Opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
