Cobras Upset of Ashland Highlights Day One Sweep at Super Region Duals

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker wrestling picked up two wins on day one of the Super Region 2 Duals, capped off by a thrilling 21-19 comeback victory over the Ashland Eagles.

In Coker's first dual the hosts clashed with King, coming away with a 37-6 victory. Charlie Huff started Coker off on the right track with a 3-1 decision win at 125. Rashad Cunningham would pick up a heavy 15-5 major decision victory at 157, followed by a win by fall (4:41) from Derek Rothermel at 165. From there, Coker would sweep the remaining bouts to secure the victory. Derrick Booth gutted out a 2-1 decision at 174 pounds, while John Allen Griswold would score a 9-3 decision at 197. Derrick Nelson (133) and Luis Peguero (184) both earned wins by forfeit in the contest.

Next would come the matchup with Ashland. Charlie Huff (125) picked up his second win of the day by decision 10-6. Derrick Nelson would earn the shutout at 133 winning by decision 5-0. Jamal Lackey brought the home crowd to its feet winning by fall (2:12) at 165 to put Coker up 12-10. The home team trailed 19-15 going to the heavyweight bout. Austin Akins embraced the pressure and ignited the crowd once again sealing the win at the 6:19 mark with a pin.

The action resumes Saturday morning (Jan. 30) at 9:00 a.m. Coker will take on Emmanuel at 11:00 a.m. and round out the event facing Kutztown at 3:00 p.m. Video of the Coker matches will be available at www.cokercobras.com
