Cobras Host Embry-Riddle in Season Opener

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College women's lacrosse team opens up their 2018 season at home versus the Embry-Riddle (FL) Eagles under the helm of reigning South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year, Kate Keagins.

The Cobras are headed by three key returners in Faith Kent, Haley McCusker, and goalkeeper Cassie Williams.

Kent has eclipsed the 100 goal mark (104) heading into her third year of eligibility. She has also collected 65 assists (50 last season alone), caused 21 turnovers, controlled 56 draws, and picked up 58 ground balls. Kent won the 2017 SAC statistical champion accolade in points per game (5.38), as well as a one-time SAC Offensive Player of the Week, All-SAC first team selection, and SAC Player of the Year. She was recently named to the conference preseason first team as an attack.

McCusker was also tabbed a SAC preseason first team member alongside Kent. She scored a Coker single-season record 79 goals and added eight assists to bring her to a total of 87 points, which is second on the single-season points list at Coker. She also collected 38 ground balls, won 13 draw controls, and caused 23 turnovers. Along with being named Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week once, McCusker was named to the All-SAC second team, and won the C. G. Timberlake Female Athlete of the Year award at Coker's 2017 FANG Awards.

In her freshman campaign, Williams finished with a 43.3 save percentage, while picking up the Cobras 14 wins. Her 138 saves already puts her at the top of the Coker all-time list in her one year and her save percentage places her second. Williams also ranks first all-time in goals against average with 9.58. She was also named SAC Defensive Player of the Week once

Embry-Riddle comes into the game with a 1-0 record after defeating Chowan 20-6. They are led by Gillian Greenberg, who had a six goal performance in her appearance.

Opening draw for the Navy and Gold is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Coker Athletic Field. Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to all Coker faculty, staff and students.
