Coker Kicks Off Season with 71-57 Win Over Pfeiffer

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's basketball team kicked off their season opener with a 71-57 win over Pfeiffer University on Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.

The first bucket of the game was scored by Pfeiffer (0-1, 0-0), but that was the only lead that the Falcons would take over the Cobras for the rest of the game.   Coker (1-0, 0-0) quickly took command of a 15-4 offensive run, compliments of head coach Jenny Finora's full court pressure.  Coker's stifling defense forced the Falcons into 14 first half turnovers and paved the way to a comfortable 36-21 lead at halftime.

Coker continued to build their lead in the second half and would go up by 28 points after a Jessica Cohen lay-up with just under ten minutes remaining in the game.  Pfeiffer however began to battle back with a 9-0 offensive run, but the streak was quickly tarnished when Heidrun Kristmundsdottir connected from behind the arc.

The Cobras would eventually seal the deal after knocking down late jump shots, and connecting from the charity stripe.

Priscilla Fenty led the team in scoring with 14 points, while Kristmundsdottir was next with 13 of her own.  Terrika Foster also reached double-digit scoring with 12 points, while Tanesha Stenson collected a double-double for the Cobras with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Cohen also ended the game with 10 rebounds, and tallied five points.

Coker will hit the road for more nonconference action, as they head to UNC Pembroke to take on the Braves next Thursday (Nov. 14).  Game time is set for a 6:00 p.m. tip off.
