Cobras Split Season Finale with Lions

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Saturday (Apr. 23) in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the visiting Mars Hill University Lions. The Cobras dropped game one by a score of 5-0 and then turned around to pick up a 12-7 win in game two. 

In game one, the Lions plated three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to pick up the eventual 5-0 win.

Mindy North led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double. Riley Morris, Tayler Barcomb and Corrine Stiles all picked up one hit apiece.

Augusta Jackson was hit with the loss. She gave up five earned runs in four innings of work. Tabitha Allen gave up just one hit in three innings of shutout relief.

In game two, the Cobras exploded for four runs in the first inning. After Ashley Gallman singled and Morris reached on an error, Maria Williamson stepped up and blasted a three-run home run to center field to give Coker the 3-0 lead. Barcomb kept the inning alive with a single to left field, then Stiles belted an RBI double to left field, scoring Barcomb from first. The Cobras kept the offensive assault going, plating six in the second inning. Gallman got things started with an RBI single, scoring Breana Ard. After Barcomb drew an RBI walk, Stiles slashed a two-RBI single to center field scoring Morris and Gallman. Carylann Geddes jumped in on the offensive parade, singling to right field, scoring Stiles and Barcomb and giving Coker the 10-0 lead. The Lions clawed their way back in, scoring two runs in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it a 10-7 game, however, it was Stiles who struck again, this time belting a two-run home run to give Coker a 12-7 lead and the eventual five-run win.

Stiles led the way, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Gallman and Barcomb had two hits apiece, while picking up one RBI each. North, Morris, Geddes and Ard all notched one hit in game two, with Williamson hitting a home run and plating three RBIs. Geddes also had two RBIs in the win.

Taylor Forehand picked up the win, scattering two earned runs on six hits in three innings.

That concludes the Coker softball 2015-16 season.
