Cobras Split Twinbill With Trojans to Open Conference Play

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 20) against the visiting Anderson University Trojans in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Cobras picked up a 2-0 win in the opening game, before dropping game two 4-2.

In game one, neither team could plate a run through the first three and a half innings. However, the Cobras would strike first in the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded and no outs, Carley Bailey stepped to the plate and slashed a single into the left field, plating Taylor Brown, giving Coker the 1-0 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning and top half of the sixth inning, the Coker offense struck again. It was Bailey again reaching on a fielder's choice, plating Tayler Barcomb and giving Coker the 2-0 lead. The Trojans went down one, two, three in the seventh inning to secure the 2-0 win in the opener.

Bailey finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Barcomb went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Maria Williamson, Allyson High, and Makayla Shore all picked up hits as well.

Augusta Jackson (4-1) picked up the win in the circle. She scattered five hits in a complete game shutout.

Game two was once again a pitcher's duel, with neither team plating a run through the first five innings. However, a walk and single in the top of the sixth inning for Anderson gave them a 2-0 lead. A Cailah Niles home run in the top of the seventh put Anderson ahead 4-0. The Cobras would not go down quietly however, as Riley Morris belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. That was as far as the Coker comeback would go, with Anderson scoring the 4-2 win to split the doubleheader.

Morris led the way, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Courtney Boan also went 2-for-3, while Gallman, Williamson, High and Shore all picked up hits.

Taylor Forehand was tagged with the loss. She scattered two runs on five hits in five innings of work.

The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow (Mar. 21) to take on the visiting Mercyhurst University Lakers in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Saleeby-Stokes softball field.
