No. 36 Cobras Outlast Royals 6-3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 36 nationally ranked Coker men's tennis team picked up a close 6-3 victory over the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Friday (Mar. 21) in South Atlantic Conference action. The win moves Coker to 5-1 in conference play and sole possession of second place in the SAC standings.

The Cobras would fall behind 2-1 following doubles play, but would battle back in singles action to capture the match. Andre Staab would pick up a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles after beginning the match knotted at 6-all after an hour of play. After dropping the opening sets of their matches, Tom Sizeland and William Marrafao would pick up 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victories in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively to give the Cobras a 4-2 lead. James Corfield would preserve the win for the Navy and Yellow with a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Rounding out the wins for Coker was Martin Moncayo with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.

Staab, Sizeland and Moncayo each improved to 6-0 in conference play, while Sizeland extended his singles winning streak to nine matches.

The Cobras will return to action tomorrow (Mar. 22) for a SAC showdown with the Bears of Lenior-Rhyne University. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Coker tennis courts.
