Cobras Blank Bears in Non-Conference Match

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – A pair of goals from Robbie Jenkinson propelled the Coker men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Shaw University Bears in Saturday's (Sept. 9) non-conference match.

The Cobras came out aggressive and attacked the goal early and often.

Aladdin Elfares split a couple of defenders in the 23rd minute and setup a penalty kick for the Cobras. Jenkinson was sent to take the penalty shot and took full advantage of his scoring opportunity by burying the ball past Shaw's goalkeeper. The Navy and Gold held on to their 1-0 advantage into the half.

During the second half, the Cobras continued to apply pressure on the Bear's defensive unit. Next, Joby Griggs made a couple of shifty moves to beat his defender and drew a yellow card, setting up Coker with another penalty kick opportunity. Once again, the Cobras called on Jenkinson to extend their lead over the Bears. Jenkinson went on to rip a shot past the Shaw goalkeeper in the 66th minute, giving Coker a 2-0 lead. The Coker defense would remain strong in the final 24 minutes, securing the shutout and the 2-0 victory.

Jenkinson led the way for the Navy and Gold offensively, firing four shots on goal and recording two scores. In addition, Jacob Simonis added three shots and Elfares contributed two. Defensively, Justin Walker earned a clean sheet and tallied two saves.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 13) when they host Newberry to open up South Atlantic Conference play at 4:30 p.m.
