Coker Earns Back-to-Back Conference Championships

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's soccer team captured their second consecutive regular season Conference Carolinas championship on Saturday night  thanks to a 2-1 win over Limestone College. Junior Akeem Prendes scored the game-winning goal for Coker in the 74th minute of play.

The victory gives the Cobras an 8-1-1 conference record and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament which begins on Tuesday. Coker will play host to the No. 8 seed Queens University of Charlotte at 7 p.m.

The Cobras entered the match in second place behind Limestone and with a conference championship on the line both teams came prepared to play hard. A combined 23 fouls were called and neither team was ready to give way for the other.

Coker struck first when senior Noah Lascell took a perfectly played ball from Tony Quiroz down the sideline and placing it in the upper right corner in the 19th minute of the match. Then with just 30 seconds remaining in the first half Thomas Metzemaekers scored the equalizer for the Saints making it 1-1 at the break.

The score remained even until Prendes beat the keeper on a header off a perfect cross from Stephen Scrivens in the 74th minute. The goal gave Coker the lead and the eventual win.

Coker honored their 10 senior players during tonight's match. This group of seniors will look to lead the Cobras to their third Conference Carolinas Tournament title starting Tuesday.
