Taylor's Golden Goal Gives Coker 1-0 Win

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Matt Taylor buried the ball in the back of the net five minutes into overtime, giving the Coker men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Erskine College on Saturday night. The win moves the regionally ranked No. 9 Cobras into second place in the Conference Carolinas standings with a 5-1 record in league play and a 9-3 overall record.

Coker applied solid pressure to the Fleet defense the entire match, out shooting Erskine 20-11. However, some outstanding defensive plays and two spectacular stops by Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina kept the score tied through regulation.

The Cobras offensive attack continued into extra time and after five minutes of play Taylor put home his second game-winner of the season.

In addition to holding the advantage on shots, Coker also held a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks.

James Sweeney earned his fourth shut out of the year and his second clean sheet in a row, with seven saves in the match.

The Cobras will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17at home against North Greenville University. Kick-off for the conference match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
