Nelson Propels Coker Past Erskine

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Julian Nelson scored a career high 34 points, propelling the Coker men's basketball team to a 79-74 win over Erskine College on Thursday night. The win improves the Cobras to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas play.

After allowing the opening basket of the game, the Cobras went on a 13-3 run and never relinquished the lead. At halftime Coker held a 41-29 advantage, but a strong second half by Erskine allowed the Flying Fleet to narrow the Cobra lead. The Fleet trailed by just two points, 50-48, with 13:06 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Cobras finished the night 10-for-17 (58.8 percent) from 3-point range and they shot 50.9 percent from the floor. They out rebounded Erskine 38-28 and the Coker bench out scored the Fleet 15-0.

In addition to his career high points, Nelson pulled in five rebounds and had two assists. Sharod Williams earned his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards, while Andrew Morris had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Cobras have won five of their last six games, including three straight at home. They will be back at home for their next game on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 4 p.m. against Conference Carolinas foe North Greenville University.
