MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.Mount Olive had its 21-match home winning streak snapped as the Trojans fell to Coker 30-14, 30-28, 30-14 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. The match was the Trojans’ 2006 conference and home opener.

 

Mount Olive (1-4 overall, 0-1 CVAC) fell behind early in game one as Coker (3-6, 2-0) built a 19-9 advantage and led by double figures the rest of the game.

 

In game two, Mount Olive jumped out to a 5-1 lead on early kills by Anna-Marie Luft and Sam Mitchell. Coker chipped into the lead before tying the game at 17-17. The game saw five more ties before Coker pulled out to a 25-22 lead. Mitchell’s kill fought off one game point to pull the Trojans within 29-28, but Coker’s Bianca Larson saved a ball wide of the net, then finished the point with a kill to give the Cobras a two-game lead.

 

In game three, Coker took an early nine-point lead and libero Kelsey Carlson broke the game open with six consecutive service points to put the Cobras ahead 23-7.

 

Mitchell led Mount Olive with eight kills, while Luft and Alicia Mote had six kills apiece. Mariangelix Cordero recorded a pair of service aces and Racey Bartley had two blocks.

 

Coker was led by Allie Bragg with a match-high 12 kills and Megan Haupt with 10 kills and 18 digs. Carlson tallied 18 digs and four service aces.

 

Mount Olive begins a three-match road trip Friday as the Trojans travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey in a CVAC match-up. Match time is 6:30 p.m. Coker plays host to Pfeiffer Friday at 6:30 p.m. in CVAC action.
