Coker Defeats Montevallo in Tennis Against Breast Cancer Match

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 non-conference win over the University of Montevallo on Wednesday afternoon. As part of the match, the Cobras hosted their first ever Tennis Against Breast Cancer Event. The win improves Coker's record to 6-5 on the year.

The Cobras opened the match with three straight wins in doubles play. Alyssa Blanchard (Columbia, S.C.) and Stephanie Medley (Sumter, S.C.) picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Cora Berna (Spain) and Kayla Meermans (Pelion, S.C.) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2. Faith Baxley (Mullins, S.C.) and Brittanny Yando (Sumter, S.C.) earned the shutout win at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

Then in singles play Coker earned four more victories taking home the 7-2 win. Blanchard won by default at No. 1 and Berna earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Meermans was victorious at No. 5 winning 6-2, 6-1 and Yando picked up the win at No. 6, 6-3, 6-0.

As part of their Tennis Against Breast Cancer match head coach Tom Simpson hosted a free tennis clinic for women prior to the start of the match. The Cobras also raised money to be donated to Tennis Against Breast Cancer.

The Cobras will be back on the courts on Friday for a Conference Carolinas match at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive College.
