Coker Women Open Season with 7-2 Win

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's tennis team got their 2012 season off to great start with a 7-2 win over North Greenville University on Tuesday evening in Conference Carolinas tennis action. The win, a first for Tom Simpson as the head coach of the Cobra women, moves them to 1-0.

The Cobras opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches, with Alyssa Blanchard (Columbia, S.C.) and Stephanie Medley (Sumter, S.C.) capturing an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot and Faith Baxley (Mullins, S.C.) and Brittanny Yando (Sumter, S.C.) winning 9-8 (10-6) at No. 3 doubles.

Coker proceeded to pick up wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. Cora Berna (Spain) had a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Kayla Meermans (Pelion, S.C.) earned her first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 1-6 (10-6) victory at No. 5 singles.

Coker returns to the courts on Wednesday at home against North Georgia. Both the men's and women's matches will begin at 3:00 p.m.
