NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Coker women’s tennis team got their 2011 season off to a smashing start on Thursday with an 8-1 victory over Newberry College.

The match began with the Cobra women picking up victories in two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Alyssa Blanchard (Columbia, S.C.) and Stephanie Medley (Sumter, S.C.) picked up an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Then Cora Berna (Torrevieja, Spain) and Kendall Sigmon (Hilton Head, S.C.) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The Cobras had a most impressive performance in the singles portion of the match as they swept through the Wolves winning every single set. Medley and freshman Faith Baxley (Mullins, S.C.) played especially well. Medley won her match 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Baxley picked up a pair 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 5 singles.

With a great start to the season the Cobra women will look to carry their success into their next match against Conference Carolinas power Erskine College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
