CHARLOTTE, NC — The Coker women’s tennis team earned its first match of the 2005 season Sunday afternoon with a 8-1 victory at Johnson C. Smith University.  The men’s squad trailed 2-1 after doubles competition but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather. 

In the women’s match, the Cobras completed won the doubles portion 3-0 over the Golden Bulls.  CC’s Andrea Santos and Sarah Hickman defeated Jennifer Lee and Patricia Ofori 8-4 at #1 doubles.  In the second flight senior Jen Crocker and freshman Jill Smith were 8-4 winners over Amber Shoecraft and April Lewis.  Finally, Ashley Pace and Neely Davis swept Nisa Kibona and Natasha Hairston 8-0.   Santos fell at #1 singles 6-2, 6-0 against Lee but the Cobras took the final five matches.

Coker’s #1 doubles team of Duncan Grew and Matt Byford defeated Michael White and Ramar Douglas 8-4 but CC dropped the second and third flights 9-7 and 8-6.  Rain swept in during the singles competition, forcing the cancellation of the match.
