Cobras Battle Wolves and Elements, Come Up Just Short

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker women's soccer team fought bravely through the steady rain, but fell just short against Newberry College on Wednesday night (Oct. 6) by a score of 3-1.

The Wolves took a 2-0 lead early into the second half when the Cobras struck back on the scoreboard. Freshman Lexi Lilly made a great slaloming run in the opponent's defensive area and was taken down in the penalty box by a hard Newberry challenge. Fellow freshman Maya Askew stepped up and powered a penalty shot past the diving Wolves keeper to make the score 2-1.

The Cobras would continue to put pressure on the Newberry defense throughout the second half as six of their eight total shots were taken in the second stanza, but Newberry would add a third goal to make the final tally 3-1.

Askew led the way for Coker scoring her first collegiate goal. Fellow freshmen Dylan Winstead and Adriana Berruti contributed with three and two shots respectively. Goalkeeper Sarah Swaim recorded eight saves in net, bringing her career total to 246 as she sits fifth all-time on the career saves list.

The Cobras will be back in action this Homecoming weekend as they play host to Mars Hill University on Saturday (Oct. 9). Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com
