DUE WEST, SC—The Erskine College Women’s Soccer team defeated Coker Saturday afternoon at Huggins Field, 2-1, but suffered a crushing blow, losing freshman goaltender Si'Ara Washington 10 minutes in to the contest. Washington’s face crashed hard into the right post making a crucial save. Washington was transported to Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, SC. Her status is not yet known.

Erskine got on the board at the 14:32 mark, only minutes after losing Washington. Freshman Amanda Tinker fired a shot from the left wing 10 yards past the penalty box that went over the out-stretched arms of Coker goalie Margaret McCoy. It was the Woodruff, SC native’s third goal of her Erskine career that put the Fleet up 1-0. They held onto the lead for the remainder of the half, but not without heroics from junior Casey Cash. The junior forward, pressed into goalie duties turned away Coker’s Bridget Clark’s penalty kick midway through the half. Cash was superb in goal for her first college outing. The Fleet’s leading scorer made 10 saves on the afternoon.

Erskine went up 2-0 on sophomore Tory Lybrand’s first goal of her career. Lybrand was assisted by Kim Barron. Coker made things tight at 65:20 when Kathryn Friedmann fired from straight in front of the goal past Cash to trim the margin to 2-1. The Cobras got three more good attempts at goal but could not finish and the Fleet earned their first Conference Carolinas victory.

Erskine improved 2-3 and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while Coker drops to 3-3 and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas. The Cobras next match is on Wednesday, when they travel to Queens University. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.
