NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker College wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Newberry Duals Sunday (Dec. 2) afternoon. Coker fell to No. 9 Western State Colorado University 40-6, Bellarmine University 28-16, and Southeastern University 28-9. John Watts (125 pounds) highlighted the day with a 2-0 record, while Chris Poland (133 pounds) and Bret Shurina (165 pounds) recorded a 2-1 record on the day.
The Cobras began competition by taking on the ninth ranked team in NCAA Division II, the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers, and fell 40-6. Watts began the dual with a gritty 6-4 decision over Trent Piatt at the 125 pounds. The Navy and Gold collected their final victory at 157 pounds when Corey Christie toughed out a 4-2 decision over Jason Slaughter.
In their next dual, the Navy and Gold took on Bellarmine University and dropped the dual 28-16. Watts began the dual on a positive note with a 16-7 major decision over Brandon Lucas. Poland kept the momentum rolling for the Cobras at 133 pounds with a tight 3-2 decision over Casey Ragle. After dropping the next two bouts, Shurina tacked on crucial bonus points for Coker with a fall over Gavin Grime in 3:51. Bellarmine battled back and won the next three weight classes, but Ramon Correa wrapped up the dual meet on a high note with an 8-3 decision over Brian Stears at 285 pounds.
The Cobras finished competition at the Newberry Duals with a 28-9 loss to the 17th ranked team in NAIA, the Southeastern University Fire. Poland picked up Coker's first victory at 133 pounds with a tough 6-5 decision, earning his second win of the day. Coker picked up one more victory during the dual at the 165 pound weight class where Shurina earned his second fall of the day in 1:41 over Dylan Chatterton.
The Cobras will compete in one more competition before the holiday break when they travel to Indianapolis to compete in the prestigious Midwest Classic from Dec. 15-16.
