Cobras Sweep Fayetteville St. In Season Opener

Hartsville, SC: The Coker University Softball team kicked off their season in full swing with a double header sweep over Fayetteville St. winning the first game by a score of 15-1 in favor of the Cobras. Coker was able to follow up in the second game with an 8-1 final score.

Game 1: Coker 15, Fayetteville St. 1

In the first game, Coker was able to start off the scoring in the top of the first as Delaney Eaves was able to reach base on an error which plated one and Cameron Jackson was able to pick up an RBI on a ground out to short making the game 2-0 after the first inning.

Coker was able to add two more runs in the top of the 2nd inning as Kelsie Gollie would plate Caityln Wray on an RBI single to right. Gollie would eventually score on an Ariana Fair ground out to first base which would make the score 4-0 heading into the third.

In the third inning, Coker was able to pull away plating eight to pull away making the score 12-0 heading in to the fourth. The highlights of the inning came off of a two RBI double to right center hit by Delaney Eaves which would plate Ariana Fair and Kelsi Scott. Following the two RBI double, Julie Hilliard would follow up with a two RBI single that would score Eaves from second and Cameron Jackson from third. Coker would also see RBIs this inning contributed from Ariana Fair, Kelsey Gollie, and Mya Cribbs.

In the fourth and fifth innings Coker was able to get three runs combined, off the strength of two home runs one hit by Caitlyn Wray in the top of the fourth, who finished game one 2 for 2 with three runs scored on the day. Abbie McCants was able to hit the other home run in the top of the fifth after Payton Rainey scored on a passed ball. Sealing the 15-1 victory for the Cobras

On the mound

Madie Andrews got the ball to start Game 1 for the Cobras, as she would go on to pitch 3.2 innings pitched only giving up one hit and striking out three. Abbie McCants would come in to finish the game pitching for the Cobras pitching 1.1 innings also only giving up one hit and striking out three.

Game 2: Coker 8, Fayetteville St. 1

In game two, Coker was able to start off the scoring once again in the top of the first, as Kelsi Scott would score on a sacrafice fly by Ariana Fair to give the Cobras an early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Coker was able to get a two more runs on the board, as Kelsi Scott and Ariana Fair would both hit sacrafice flies, scoring Gracen Chambless and Ashton Goodwin to put the Cobras up 3-0 heading into the 3rd inning.

Coker would be held scoreless in the top of the third before plating two more in the top of the fourth with an Ariana Fair single back to the pitchers scoring Mya Cribbs and a Cameron Jackson sacrafice fly, the Cobra's third on the day. Making the score 5-0 heading into the the later innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Fayetteville St. was able to get one across on an RBI double hit by Angelica Locklear, making the score 5-1 heading to the top of the 6th. Coker would respond with a three run, top of the sixth which saw Cameron Jackson plate home a run on a fielders choice. However, the highlight of the inning came from Abbie McCants, who was able to finish off the scoring with two run single in the top of the 6th, which would score Savanah Folwer and Cameron Jackson.

McCants' double would cap off the scoring for the night with the final being 8-1 in favor of Coker.

On The Mound

Cheyenne Palmer took the mound for the Cobras in game two, going five complete innings striking out two on the day while only allowing one run to cross. Tibby Hessian would come in and pick up the save going two innings and striking out three during her apperance.

Up Next For Coker

Coker will return to action on Tuesday, February 6th, as they will travel to face Lander for a 2:00PM first pitch.
