Softball Sweeps Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Coker University softball team swept conference opponent Newberry on the road today by scores of 6-4 and 8-6. 

 

Game One

Newberry would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning by way of a three run home run.

In the second, Coker would chip into the Wolves lead from Caitlyn Wray's RBI sacrifice fly that brought home Bailey Douglas.

Chloe Pelham's 2 RBI double to right center would score Ava Jay and Brooklyn Stueness to tie things up at 3-3.

The Cobras would get the go ahead run from Bailey Douglas's RBI single through the left side to score Chloe Pelham and put Coker ahead 4-3. 

In the top of the sixth Ava Jay RBI single down the right field line would score Delaney Eaves, putting Coker ahead by two. 

Coker's final run would come from Arianna Fair's RBI single to right, scoring Stueness and putting the Cobras up 6-3. 

Newberry would try and mount a comeback in the seventh when they would scratch across one lone run to bring the game one score to 6-4. 

 

Game Two

 

The Wolves would again jump out ahead in the first by way of a home run, putting them up 3-0. 

Ava Jay's single to left would bring home Brooklyn Stueness as Coker would cut into Newberry's lead. Bailey Douglas singled to left center to score Jay and put Coker within one. 

In the bottom of the third with two outs, Kayla Oswell would launch a home run that is still going over the center field wall and scoring Bailey Douglas and Chloe Pelham to put the Cobras up 6-3. 

In the fourth and the sixth, Newberry would scratch across a run to bring the score to 6-5.

In the top of the seventh, Kayla Oswell would hit a 2 RBI single to center, scoring Ava Jay and Arianna Fair while putting Coker up 8-5. 

Newberry would again try to mount a comeback but fall short and the Cobras took game two 8-6. 

Jordyn Goodman would pick up two saves on the day, while Callie Thornton (8-9) picked up the win in game one and Hannah Fisher (1-1) picked up her first win of the season in the circle. 

 

Kayla Oswell would end the day with five RBI's, while Bailey Douglas would record three, and Chloe Pelham would record two. 

 

Coker is back in action this weekend on the road against No. 21 ranked Anderson University, first pitch is set for 1 p.m. and game two roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Video and livestats will be available at www.cokercobras.com
