Phillips Guides Cobras to Doubleheader Split with Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. – The Coker softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Wingate on Tuesday (Apr. 8), at the Wingate University Softball Complex.

In game number one the score was all tied up at 3-3 after five innings.  After a scoreless sixth inning from both teams, the Bulldogs collected a walk-off single and took the game by a slight 4-3 margin.

Sydney Weatherford notched her seventh homerun of the season, while collecting three RBI for the game.  Katelyn Szupello and Stacy Burr each tallied one double and scored one run apiece.

Tabitha Allen (4-6) would be charged with the loss after giving up one run on four hits in two innings pitched.

Game number two had similar story, except this time the Cobras were able to pull out the win.  In the top of the seventh, the score was tied at 2-2.  Then with two outs and the bases loaded, Lauren Phillips singled through the left side to drive in the go-ahead RBI as the Cobras took a 3-2 lead.  Coker was then able to shutout Wingate in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.

Tayler Barcomb led Coker at the plate with a homerun and two RBI, while Szupello and Carley Bailey each collected a double.

Along with the game winning RBI, Phillips (10-9) would also get the win on the mound after pitching four innings.  Phillips gave up just four hits and no runs while fanning two bulldogs.

Coker will return home this Saturday (Apr. 12) to host Tusculumn in a SAC doubleheader.  Game number one will start at 1:00 p.m. followed by game two at 3:00.
