Cobras and Bulldogs Battle to Doubleheader Split

WILSON. N.C. – The Coker softball team split a non conference doubleheader against Barton College on Sunday (Mar. 9).  The Cobras now sit at 9-8 on the year.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in game one after scoring one run in the first, and then extended their lead after scoring five more runs in the fifth.  Coker would tack on one run in the top of the seventh, but eventually Barton would preserve the 6-1 win.

Tayler Barcomb led the Navy and Yellow at the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 at with a double and one run scored.  Sydney Weatherford, Ashley Gallman, and Carley Bailey all went 1-for-3, with Bailey knocking in the Cobras' only RBI.

Jessica Koumas (1-2) would be marked with the loss after 4.2 innings on the mound and giving up six runs on 13 hits.

Game number two was scoreless through five innings, until Coker pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth.  The Cobras would then go on to shut out the home team, and capture the 2-0 win.

Megan Strickland went 2-for-3 at the plate for Coker in game number two, with one run scored.  Sydney Weatherford and Ashlee Ellen both went 1-for-1, each with an RBI, while Katelyn Szupello went 1-for-2 with one run scored. 

Logan Cox (1-0) got the win on the bump for Coker, after seven innings of work.  Cox struck out three Bulldogs while giving up just seven hits.

Coker will return home to host Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday (Mar. 11) in a nonconference doubleheader.  Game number one will start at 2:00 p.m., followed by game number two at 4:00 p.m.
