KENNESAW, GA - Kennesaw State freshman Brittany Matthews pitched a perfect game to lead the top-seed Owls to a 12-0 win over No. 6-seed Coker in an elimination game at the 2005 South Atlantic Region Championships at the Bobbie Bailey Athletic Complex.

Matthews (25-3) was masterful as she retired all 21 hitters she faced in the game. The left-hander was so dominant that only one Coker hitter saw a three-ball count. Matthews struck out eight batters and did not allow a groundout as she kept Kennesaw State alive in the tournament.

The Owls (49-11) took a while to get going, but scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to snap a streak of 29 consecutive innings of NCAA tournament play without a run.

Kennesaw State got 13 hits from their offense with all of their runs coming in the final three innings. Kelley Cowart, Amy Middleton and Keri McKee each had two hits while designated player Megan Gant hit a  grand slam home run to left field to highlight an eight-run seventh inning for the Owls.

Coker (31-17), who scored just one run during the tournament, kept Kennesaw State close through four innings before starter Somer Bigham ran out of steam in the fifth inning.

Kennesaw State will face their second elimination game of the day when they play Carson-Newman in the final game of the session at 7:30 p.m.
