Game Eighteen: #6 Queens 6 – #4 Anderson 2 (10)
HARTSVILLE, SC – Queens outlasted Anderson 6-2 in 10 innings to stay alive in the CVAC Tournament. The Royals took the lead in the third and the fifth but both times AC came back to tie the game. Anderson loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning but Queens pitcher Meg Barker struck out the seven and eight hitters and got a lineout to the shortstop for out number three. The Trojans loaded them again in the ninth with one out but again couldn’t get a run home. The Royals took advantage of a third opportunity and got the key hit that Anderson couldn’t. Brittne’ Stubbs doubled in Serena Fierro and Cynthia Ochoa for a 4-2 lead and Danielle Woodford homered to make it 6-2. Stubbs went 2-5 with a triple, a double and three RBI, while Fierro went 3-4 with two doubles.
Game Nineteen: #6 Queens 5 - #2 Belmont Abbey 0
HARTSVILLE, SC – Queens won its third consecutive elimination game 5-0 against Belmont Abbey to advance to the championship game. The Royals got on the board early with one in the third and made it 3-0 in the fourth on an error by the second baseman. In the seventh inning Queens used a single and two doubles to score a pair of games and ice the game. Royal pitcher Meg Barker pitched another outstanding game, scattering four hits, and a walk with six strikeouts. Brittne’ Stubbs had a homerun, a stolen base and two runs scored to lead Queens.
Game Twenty: #1 Coker 6 – #6 Queens 4
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker claimed the CVAC Tournament Championship Sunday with a 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte. The Cobras built a 6-0 lead over the first few innings and held off the Royals late to take their sixth CVAC championship. Coker earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional, which will take place May 12-15.
In the fourth inning Coker put runners on first and third with two outs when freshman Jessica Blackwell muscled a double into the left field gap for a 6-0 lead. The Royals battled back with one in the fifth and could have had more but Christan Morabito rifled the ball home to throw the second runner out at the plate. Queens started the sixth with two singles and both runners scored on a single by Serena Feirro to make it 6-3.
QUC turned the pressure up in the seventh inning when Brittne’ Stubbs singled, stole second and scored to make it 6-4 with no outs. Pitcher Somer Bigham settled in, however and got the final three outs on a pair of popups and a strikeout.
Eunice Nettles went 2-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead CC, while Marie Mascio also went 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Erin Crager and Serena Fierro both went 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Royals. Bigham earned the win with a complete game performance, allowing seven hits and striking out six batters.
