Pembroke, NC – In Sunday afternoon softball action, sophomore hurler Nicole McCorkle tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters en route to a 2-0 game one win over the Cobras of Coker College. The Braves went on to complete the doubleheader sweep of Coker with an 11-5 win in game two. Catcher Wendi Cochran (pictured) delivered a two-out two-run single in the fourth inning that proved to be the game-winning hit. UNCP improves to 4-0 on the season, while Coker now stands at 2-2 overall.

It was all McCorkle in game one as the talented pitcher again dominated on the mound, taking a perfect game into the fifth inning. CC's Nicole Crider then delivered the Cobras first of two hits, only to see McCorkle force a pop-up and tally yet another strikeout to end any scoring threat.

The Braves received all the offense they would need in the bottom of the third. Freshman Katie Linkous led off with a double and scored on a Danielle Peters RBI-single to left field. An error allowed Peters to advance to third, and Debbie Aquiar gave Pembroke a 2-0 lead on the very next pitch with an RBI-groundout.

Game two saw Coker jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After UNCP starter Amanda Busch struck out the first two batters she faced, Coker strung together three consecutive hits by Jessica Blackwell, Crider, and Kimberly Atkinson. Those, coupled with a Braves error, allowed for the early Cobra advantage.

Pembroke answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Aguiar walked and eventually scored on a throwing error. With two outs, senior Jessica Furlough ripped a single up the middle. Meredith Veglia then connected on the Braves' first homer of the season, a two-run blast to centerfield that gave UNCP a 3-2 lead.

The Cobras used two hits and two errors in the second to push across two runs and retake the lead at 4-3, but it was shortlived as the Braves plated a run in both the second and third innings for a 5-4 advantage.
