LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Finn Katz’s (Durham, N.C.) first collegiate goal was the game-winner in a 1-0 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s soccer victory for host St .Andrews Presbyterian College over Coker College on Tuesday.

The Knights, who are ranked No. 10 in latest NSCAA/adidas Southeast Regional Poll, improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the CVAC. St. Andrews has won five of their last six games.

The two teams looked to play a scoreless first half until a Coker yellow card in the final minute before intermission set up the only goal of the contest.

On the ensuing restart, sophomore Corey Abbott (Statesville, N.C.) flipped a pass from the middle of the Cobra box to the right goalpost. Waiting the volley was Katz, who ripped a one-timer to the opposite post while Coker junior goalkeeper Nathan Scales ( Kernersville, N.C.) was moving in the wrong direction with only 23 second left on the clock.

Both teams scoring chances were limited as St. Andrews held a slim 9-8 shot advantage. Coker (1-5 overall; 0-1 CVAC) had a 4-1 lead on corner kicks while SAPC was called for more fouls, 23-12.

Knights’ sophomore netminder Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) stopped all five Cobra shots on goal to preserve the victory. Tuesday’s shutout was Stevens second consecutive conference shutout and third of the season.

Scales made three saves for Coker (1-5 overall; 0-1 CVAC) including two other shots on goal by Katz.

The Knights entertain CVAC foe Anderson University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.; while the Cobras host league rival Erskine College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
