Cobras Downed by Indians in SAC Action

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the visiting Catawba College Indians 14-8 Thursday (Mar. 15) afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action. The Cobras controlled the first half of action, taking a 7-5 lead into halftime. However, the Indians stormed back for the victory.

Coker tallied their first score of the game at the 11:59 mark of the first quarter when DeShaun Ormond ripped a shot into the top right corner of the cage. Next, Rylee Marsh received an excellent feed from Ryan Bass and scored to knot the game up at two apiece. With short time remaining in the opening quarter, Marsh found an open Charles Stafford who beat the Catawba goalkeeper for a 3-2 Coker lead.

The Navy and Gold came out in the second quarter firing on all cylinders on the offensive end, recording three-straight goals to gain a 6-2 lead. Denton Wilks, Matt Murphy, and Marsh found the back of the cage during the run. Wilks went on to score one more time in the quarter, ripping a shot from outside off a Lucas Hediger feed. Coker headed into the half with a 7-5 lead. Ethan Irizarry tallied Coker's lone goal in the second half.

Marsh led the Cobras on the offensive end with three points, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist. Wilks finished the game with two goals, while Murphy added one goal and one assist. Defensively, Cole Theodoropolous caused a team-best three turnovers and Ormond led the Cobras with four ground balls. Chris Hagy collected seven saves in the cage.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 21) when they travel to Newberry to take on the Wolves in SAC play. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
