Hartsville, SC- Coker College is proud to announce the hiring of Tommy Baker as the new Head Men’s Golf Coach for the Cobras. Baker joins the Coker golf program after spending the past year at UNC-Pembroke as the Graduate Assistant Coach for the men’s and women’s teams.
Baker is a native of Fayetteville, NC, and a 2006 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he received a B.S. with honors in Exercise in Sports Science. He was a four-time letterman for the Braves and was a four-time Peach Belt Conference Honor Roll selection.
“I am extremely honored and excited to be joining the Coker family,” said Baker. “I am very excited about the future of the golf team at Coker. They already have established themselves as a regional power and I feel they are on the verge of bursting onto the national scene.”
When asked about Tommy Baker joining the Coker coaching staff, Coker’s Director of Athletics Tim Griggs said, “Coach Baker has been a highly respected member of the University of North Carolina–Pembroke athletics staff. He will be an excellent leader and role model for the Coker College golf program. His golf knowledge, coupled with his communication skills, makes him an outstanding coach. We are very happy to have Mr. Baker join the athletics department at Coker College.”
In addition to his duties as the Head Golf Coach, Baker will also be Coker College’s Intramural and Wellness coordinator working with Coker’s Campus Life Staff. According to Director of Campus Life, Jon Driggers, “Campus Life is pleased to have Tommy Baker as part of the staff and is looking forward to a stronger Intramural/Wellness program.”

The Cobra golf team will begin their 2008 spring season in February, as they hunt for a Conference Carolinas Championship and a trip back to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
