Cobras Hang on for Wild 77-76 Win at Newberry Wednesday Night

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker University men's basketball team held on for a wild 77-76 win at Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday night (Feb. 26).

Newberry jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two minutes, before Coker would get back within one at 8-7 four minutes in. Newberry would increase its lead to six with 13 and a half minutes to play in the half, before Coker would rally to take an 18-17 lead with 12 minutes left in the half on a Chandler Lindsey three-pointer. Newberry would rally to take a 25-20 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the half, before the Wolves would eventually stretch their lead into double digits in the final five minutes of the half. Coker would get the deficit back down to five with a minute and a half to play, before Newberry would take a 44-37 lead to the locker room.

Newberry increased its lead to double-digits in the first two and a half minutes of the second half, before Coker would trim the deficit down to three with 11 and a half minutes to play in the second half. The teams would battle to a 57-57 tie with nine and a half minutes to play, before later locking up at 59 with seven and a half minutes to play. The two teams played to a 65-65 tie with four and a half minutes to go, before Newberry would go ahead by three in the final three minutes. Coker would take a 75-74 lead on a clutch Jaylin Stewart layup with a minute to go, before a pair of TJ Brown free throws would flip the script and put Newberry ahead by one with 52 seconds left. Lindsey would score the final bucket of the game on a layup in traffic with 20 seconds left, before Coker was able to successfully defend Newberry's final possession and hang on for the win.

Malcolm Kennedy led the Cobras with 20 points on the night, while Lindsey finished with 19. Williams Onyeodi also added 12, while Dakota Jennings and Stewart each chipped in 10. Ryan Carfley also added six points in the victory. Onyeodi and Stewart led the Cobras in the rebounding effort with eight apiece, with Stewart notching a new career-high. Five other Cobras were active on the glass in the victory. Lindsey dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while five others helped on Coker buckets in the win. Stewart led the Cobras with two steals in the game, while three other Cobras also registered one steal apiece. Jennings, Carfley and Stewart each recorded one block in the victory.

The Cobras return home to the DeLoach Center on Saturday (Feb. 29) to host UVA-Wise for Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
