Strong Second Half Pushes Cobras Past Southern Wesleyan

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Coker College men's basketball team moved to an even 2-2 record with an 88-84 win over the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors on Friday (Nov. 18). 

The opening half was all SWU, as Coker led for just over a minute. The Warriors surged out to an early 10-3 lead. The Cobras were able to cut the deficit to 13-10 at the 11:26 mark; however, SWU would control the remainder of the half, extending its lead to 14 with 1:11 left in the opening half. Coker would close with back-to-back buckets and head to the locker rooms trailing 50-39.

The Navy and Gold struggled to cut into the SWU lead in the opening eight minutes of the second half, trailing 67-55 with 12:14 left in the matchup. The next eight minutes would be all Coker, as the Cobras rattled off a 21-9 run to tie the game up at 76-76. Coker continued the momentum, as a Jake Barrett made three and layup left the Navy and Gold with an 82-78 lead. SWU was able to tie things up at 82 with 1:53 left, however a 6-0 offensive spurt by Coker propelled the Cobras to an 88-82 advantage with 20 seconds left. The Warriors would make a bucket with 16 seconds left, but Coker was able to hold on for the four-point 88-84 win.

Miguel Priest had a monster game, scoring 21 points, pulling down 12 rebounds and collecting three steals and three blocks. Jake Barrett and Roman Hall also scored in double figures, collecting 14 and 13 points, while LaDarius Williams finished with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Jalal Abdul-Azeez finished with nine points and four assists. Demarco Jackson rounded things out for Coker, scoring eight points, snatching nine rebounds and four steals.

Coker will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 19) at noon for game two of the Newberry Classic. The Cobras will take on Paine College.
