MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Cobras had five players score in double figures, but a layup by Mount Olive’s Derek Staton with just one second remaining in the game gave the Trojans a 79-77 win over Coker on Saturday afternoon in the Conference Carolinas men’s basketball game.

Tom Wright (Sydney, Australia), Vatrick Thompson (Columbia, S.C.), Delonte Doles (Roswell, Ga.), Joselle Bracy (Ruby, S.C.) and Liam Kyle (Cleveland, Ohio) each scored 10 or more points in the game. 

The Cobras outshot the Trojans from both the field (55.8 percent) and three-point range (53.3 percent), but Mount Olive was more successful from the charity stripe shooting 78.3 percent compared to Coker’s 61.1 percent.

It was a close scoring game from the start with the Cobras taking a narrow 39-38 lead at the half. Coker built that lead to as much as 12 in the second half, but the Trojans battled their way back over the final 10 minutes and tied the game at 77 with just six seconds left. Then it was Staton’s bucket with a second left that gave Mount Olive the 79-77 win.

Wright was the Cobras leading scorer with 20 points, while Thompson netted 15 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. Bracy and Doles each scored 12 points with Bracy grabbing five rebounds and Doles dishing out five assists. Kyle had 10 points and seven rebounds to round out the Cobras double digit scorers.

For Mount Olive Staton had a game high 25 points and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, while Brandon Allen had 24 points and four rebounds and Ewon Wright had 10 points. Dory Hines had a game leading 10 assists and 13 rebounds.

Coker will take a week off before their next game on Saturday, Jan. 22 at home against Lees-McRae. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
