WINTER PARK, FL – Coker College ran into a tough Rollins College squad Wednesday night in the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament, falling 88-62. The host Tars built a 25-point lead at halftime and maintained that lead in the second period despite Coker’s hot shooting from beyond the arc. Coker falls to 2-5 on the season while Rollins improves to 8-2. The Cobras fell behind quickly due to a porous defensive effort. The Tars ran an efficient offense and hit their open shots to open the game up early. A full-court zone press by RC also stymied the Cobras, who were unable to get good looks in the post. Coker played smarter on offense in the second half but its defensive lapses remained and the Tars took advantage with multiple layups. The Cobras hit 7-13 three-point attempts in the second period and connected on 47 percent from the field as well to keep Rollins from pulling away further. For the game the Tars hit 60 percent of their shots and 43 percent from three-point range. CC out-rebounded Rollins 35-33 but committed 15 turnovers to eight for RC. Junior Jason Fulwood led CC with 12 points on four three pointers. Senior J’Vaughn Hawkins scored eight points off the bench and classmate Michael Pierce added eight and seven rebounds before fouling out. Jonny Reibel and Eric Faber each scored 17 points for Rollins and Deon Troupe added 15. Faber also recorded seven assists and Placide Muhizi tallied eight points, five rebounds and four steals. Coker will face local rival Francis Marion in the consolation game of the Tangerine Tournament on Thursday night at 6:00 PM. Rollins moves on to the final and will face Bentley in a battle of two top-20 teams.
