Coker Receives 16 Votes in NCBWA Southeast Region Week One Poll
At 8-1 on the season, Coker sits just outside the top-10
HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College baseball team received 16 votes, just six shy of peeking inside the top-10 in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region poll. It was announced by the NCBWA on Monday (Feb. 19).
Coker is currently 8-1 on the season, having won seven-straight. The Cobras are hitting .307 as a team with a .437 slugging percentage and .428 on base. Junior transfer Michael DeVecchio (3-0, 0.00) has been a standout performer for the Navy and Gold with his three wins in three starts. The left-hander hasn't given up a single earned run in 21.0 innings in 2018, to include working three complete games, two which have been shutouts (seven inning games).
Brooks Estrada leads the charge offensively for the Cobras holding a .480 / .567 / .680 slash line in nine games. The senior outfielder has 12 hits with two doubles and home run to his credit, with five RBI and four runs scored.
Senior shortstop Bryson Conner has also contributed to the offense, driving in nine runs on the season. Four of those came on Saturday Feb. 10 against Urbana, as Conner belted Coker's first long ball of the season, a grand slam that helped lead the Cobras to a come-from-behind victory, 9-8 over the Blue Knights.
The Coker College baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 21) as they will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on the Claflin University Panthers. It will be Coker's first road trip of the 2018 season. Results from the game can be found by visiting www.cokercobras.com.
