Coker Baseball Ready for First Conference Series of the Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker baseball team will take on the Barton Bulldogs in a three-game Conference Carolinas series on Sunday (Feb. 24) and Monday (Feb. 25). Live coverage of all three games will be available online at www.cokercobras.com.

In their first conference series of the season, the regionally ranked No. 10 Cobras (7-3) will strive to continue the success they have shown in the first 10 games of the season. Coker is 3-0 when playing at home this season and is fresh off a 7-1 victory over Claflin on Wednesday (Feb. 20).

One of Coker's strengths this season has been the pitching staff's ability to keep opponents off the scoreboard. As a staff the Cobra pitchers have allowed just 43 runs in 75.1 innings. Together they have posted a 4.06 ERA. Led by senior Dan Meyer (1-1) and his 2.35 ERA; the left-hander has tossed 15.1 innings, striking out a team high 14 batters.

At the plate, the Cobras are batting .304 as a team, while they have also out scored their opponents 85-43. Junior Fico Kondla is the team's leading hitter. He has posted a .469 batting average through the first 10 games with four doubles and nine RBIs. Senior Brinley Griffin moved into first place on Coker's career RBI list with a pair of runs batted in during Wednesday's game against Claflin. Griffin currently has 85 career RBIs, 10 of which have come during the 2013 season.

Barton comes into the series with a 4-4 record. In their most recent game the Bulldogs shutout Chowan, 16-0 on Tuesday (Feb. 19). Senior Phillip Williams is the leading hitter for Barton with three home runs, nine RBIs and a .360 batting average. Sophomore Duncan Everett (1-1) leads the pitching staff with a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings of work. He has also stuck out 10 batters.

The Cobras and the Bulldogs will take the field on Sunday for a double-header starting at noon, followed by a single nine-inning game on Monday beginning at 1 p.m.
