Coker Wins Home Opener Over Newberry 11-4

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker baseball team used 19 hits to plate 11 runs in its 11-4 win over the Newberry Wolves on Tuesday (Feb. 5) in collegiate baseball action. The win improves the Cobras to 4-1 on the year.

The Cobras and the Wolves exchanged runs in the first inning, making it a 1-1 ball game. The score remained tied at one until the third inning when Coker exploded to five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Zach Loraine. Coker added two more runs in the fourth and another three in the seventh for the 11-4 win.

Freshman Alex Hernandez (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate appearance. He tossed three innings in relief, allowing just one hit and no runs. Loraine also had a solid outing on the mound for the Cobras. He went three innings allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Loraine finished the game going 2-for-5 with a homer, a double and four RBIs. Frank Suarez drove in three runs for the Cobras and Brinley Griffin was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Shea Bell had a double with an RBI and two runs scored, while Fico Kondla had two doubles and two runs scored. Keith Wolf added an RBI and two hits, and Chad Nader was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Cobras will be back on the diamond on Wednesday (Feb. 6) when they host the Falcons of St. Augustine's. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Coker's Tom J. New Field.
