Cobras Bring Home Conference Carolinas Individual Event Championship

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Coker University acrobatics and tumbling team experienced another first on Sunday (Apr 10), as they took home the first Conference Carolinas championship in program history. The Cobras finished in first place in the open pyramid event final, scoring a 9.975.

Despite just missing out by one place in the regular season team standings, the Cobras qualified for the Conference Carolinas Event Championships in six different events. The inversion pyramid event team of Paula Urquidi, Dorian Brantley, Madison McAfee, Kaylin Francavilla, Elizabeth Farester, Maleighia Haymon, Amber Garcia, Callie Jones, and Zadie Dulaney finished in third place with a score of 9.500.

The open pyramid event team, which has qualified for the national championships with its perfect 10 against #9 King (Tenn.), was victorious with a score of 9.975. The team of Urquidi, McAfee, Garcia, Brantley, Farester, Jones, Dulaney, Haymon, Francavilla, Hanna Helms, and Kayla Young will now try to replicate the feat at the National Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The open toss event team of Urquidi, Jones, Meredith Brookshire, Julie McMillan, and Ariel Davis finished in second place with a score of 8.675. The trio tumbling team of Urquidi, McAfee, and Torie Bosner took home fifth with a 6.575, while the quad tumbling team of Dulaney, Francavilla, Brookshire, and Reilly Dehner posted a 7.400 and finished in second place. Maddie McAfee wrapped up the Cobra performance with a second place in the aerial tumbling event, recording a score of 9.100.

The Cobras will travel to Eugene, Oregon to compete in the NCATA National Championships in the open toss individual event on April 28. Coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com
