Griggs Powers Cobras Past Valkyries

HARTSVILLE, S.C.  – Junior April Griggs (Bishopville, SC) tallied 13 kills as the Cobras swept Converse College 3-0 on Friday night in Conference Carolinas volleyball action.

Griggs led the Coker offense, tallying nearly half of the Cobras' kills.  Freshman Jordan Arnsmeyer (Sumter, SC) had six kills and sophomore Hannah Vadakin (Centennial, CO) had seven service aces. Kelly Stine (Fort Collins, CO) and Samantha Celek (Charleston, SC) each had double digit assists with 14 and 12 respectively and Brittany Bass (Bethune, SC) had 11 digs.  As a team Coker had six total blocks on the night.

Coker took the first set in extras 26-24, followed by winning the second set 25-19.  After a rough start to the third set, in which Converse led 8-0, Coker battled back to take a 25-15 win, allowing only seven more points for the Valkyries.  

Converse senior Val Thoms (Menasha, WI) led the team with six kills and freshman Aubrey Crosby had 14 assists and nine digs.

Coker's next match will be at Erskine tomorrow at 2 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on the America One Broadband Network.

Griggs had 13 kills, a solo block and had a .550 hitting percentage for the match.

The McDonald's Player of the Game is presented by the Hartsville McDonald's and is given to the most outstanding performer during each Coker College home athletic event.
