Misenhiemer, NC- The Coker Volleyball Team picked up a pair of wins on the road as they traveled to Pfeiffer University for the Pfeiffer Volleyball Tournament. The Cobras defeated Southern Connecticut 3-1 in their first match of the day, followed buy a win over Fayetteville State, 3-2 in their second match. With the wins the Cobras improve to 3-4 on the season.

 

In match one, Coker defeated Southern Connecticut in game one 30-21, then fell 30-28 in game two, but sealed the victory with wins in games three and four with scores of 30-21 and 30-17 respectively. Megan Haupt/Summerville, SC, was the Cobras kill leader in the match with 17 kills and five digs, while Margaret Madison/Savannah, GA, netted 14 kills and three blocks. Natalie Schembra/Hilton Head, SC, added 13 kills for the Cobras, while Courtney Butrym/Columbia, SC, gave Coker 34 assists. Kelsey Carlson/Osweego, IL, had 14 digs and four aces and Megan Gordon/Chicago, IL, had 12 assists.

 

The second match of the day, saw the Cobras fall in game one 30-21, but thanks to scores of 30-24 and 30-16 in games two and three Coker was back on top. Fayetteville State sent the match to a game five with a 30-25 win in game four. However, Coker would prevail in the end with a 15-9 fifth game victory. Madison was the offensive leader in the match with 24 kills, while Haupt had 13 kills. Schembra had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Samantha Cliborne/Goose Creek, SC, added 11 kills of her own to the match. Butrym had 59 assists and Carlson had 31 digs for the Cobras.

 

Coker returns to action on Wednesday, September 4, as they play host to their first Conference Carolinas match of the season against Barton College. Match time is 7:00 p.m. at Coker’s Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
