MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Alicia Mote led all players with 17 kills, while Joanie Werling recorded 45 assists and keyed a run late in the second game with two of her match-high four aces as Mount Olive extended its winning streak to five with a 30-20, 30-24, 27-30, 30-23 win over Coker in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. Racey Bartley and Sam Mitchell added 14 kills apiece for the Trojans.


Mount Olive (9-8 overall, 5-1 Conference Carolinas) broke away from an 8-8 tie as Mote sparked a 7-2 run with a pair of kills. The Trojans built the lead to double digits as Mote had seven kills in the first game.


Game two was tied 22-22, but after a Trojan side out, Werling served for the next six points to make the score 29-22 as Mount Olive went on to take a two-game lead. Werling was credited with her first ace when Coker was called for being out of rotation, then served an ace two points later. The Trojans trailed by as many as five points early in the game.


Mount Olive led 18-15 in game three, but Coker (7-12, 4-4) battled back as Margaret Madison served the Cobras to a 23-19 lead. Two kills, a block and an ace by Bartley rallied the Trojans to a 27-27 tie, but Megan Haupt’s kill on game point forced a fourth game.


Service runs by Kari Ham and Corie Skislak helped Mount Olive turn an early one-point advantage into an 11-6 lead in game four. Mitchell had five of her kills in the fourth game and the Trojans took their biggest lead at 26-16. Coker got as close as 27-21 and fought off two match points before Mount Olive closed out the win.


Mote came within one kill of matching her career high, which she reached in the Trojans’ previous match. Mitchell extended her streak of consecutive matches in double figures in kills to 13. She also tallied 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Mallory Peavler added 23 digs for the Trojans, while Bartley finished with six blocks and two aces.


Haupt led three Coker players in double figures with 16 kills. Samantha Cliborne added 12 kills and Madison finished with 11 kills. Cliborne and Madison also had three blocks apiece for the Cobras. Haupt added 13 digs and three aces, while Kelsey Carlson tallied 21 digs.


Mount Olive begins a stretch of seven consecutive matches away from home as the Trojans head to the Charlotte area for a pair of Conference Carolinas contests. Mount Olive takes on Queens Saturday at 2 p.m. at Charlotte, N.C., then face Pfeiffer Sunday at 1 p.m. at Misenheimer, N.C. Coker travels to Spartanburg, S.C., Friday at 6:30 p.m. to take on Converse in a Conference Carolinas match-up.
