Clinton, SC- The Coker volleyball team picked up its first win of the season in a tri-match at Presbyterian College against Union College, but not before suffering another loss to Presbyterian on Saturday.

 

In the first match of the day Coker lost to the Blue Hose 30-15, 30-17 and 30-21, dropping the Cobras to 0-6 on the year. Senior Andrea Manuel/Spartanburg, SC, led the way for the Cobras with five kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Margaret Madison/Savannah, GA, had four kills, seven digs and two blocks.

 

The second match of the day brought Coker its first victory of the season as they defeated Union College 30-16, 32-30 and 30-28. Although Coker one in straight games, the games were not without their excitement. In the second game of the match Coker was trailing 26-18 before storming back to win, and in the third game of the match Coker and Union were tied at 28 before Coker broke the tie and went on for the win.

 

The Cobras were lead by Madison who was unstoppable with 17 kills, 17 digs and three blocks. Manuel had another outstanding match as well with 12 kills and 23 digs. Junior Lauren Larsen/St.Croix, USVI, helped out with 10 kills, while sophomore Courtney Butrym/Irmo, SC, had 38 assists. Sophomore Natalie Schembra/Hilton Head, SC, and freshman Kelsey Carlson/Oswego, IL, had 12 digs and 14 digs respectively.

 

The Cobra volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, September 6 against Francis Marion University at 7 p.m. on the road.
