Cobras Drop Conference Doubleheader Matinee

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University wrestling team dropped two South Atlantic Conference Carolinas matchups Sunday afternoon to Lander University by a score of 27-15, and Queens (N.C.) by a score of 25-24.

The Cobras jumped out to an early lead against Lander after victories by Stephen Spitko at 125 pounds over Isham Peace by a score of 5-2, and Omar Armengol at 141 pounds over Hunter Jurgens by a 9-4 margin. Lander received a decision due to injury at 149 pounds to take a 9-6 lead. P.J. Wunderlich would even the score at 9-9 with a victory at 157 pounds over Lander's Bryson Ethington 3-2. The Bearcats would go on to win the next four weight classes, before Hamilton Cooper posted a win by fall at 3:48 over Scotty Dean to make the final score 27-15.

In the second meet of the day against the Royals of Queens (N.C.), the Cobras were awarded three wins by forfeit, but were unable to hold off the Royals. Corey Christie picked up a decision over Wesley Sharpe in the 165 pound weight class by a score of 4-0 to aid the Cobra effort. Hamilton Cooper earned his second victory of the afternoon in the heavyweight division as he earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Josh Voelkel of Queens (N.C.).

The Cobras return to the mat on February 5, when they travel to UNC Pembroke for a tri-meet against the Braves and the Crusaders of Belmont-Abbey. Live coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com
