HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobra wrestling team moved up to No. 2 in Super Region Two according to the latest Bassford Rankings released on Tuesday (Jan. 6). Along with their team ranking, the Cobras have nine wrestlers ranked in the top eight in their individual weight classes.
Sophomore Kevin Thompson and freshman Luis Peguero received the highest individual rankings for the Cobras. Both wrestlers are ranked No. 3 in their respective weight classes.
Thompson is ranked No. 3 at the 141-pound weight class with a record of 11-2 this season, while Peguero is ranked No. 3 at the 184-pound weight class with a record of 13-5.
Senior Travis Laxton and junior Derrick Nelson are ranked No. 4 in the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes, respectively. Laxton is 14-3 this season, while Nelson is 8-2.
Picking up No. 5 rankings are junior Derek Rothermel and sophomore Robert Parland. Rothermel is No. 5 in the 157-pound weight class with a record of 14-3, while Parland is No. 5 in the 197-pound weight class with a record of 12-4.
Rounding out the individually ranked Cobras are Alex Green and Rashad Cunningham with No. 6 rankings and Derek Booth with a No. 8 ranking. Green is No. 6 in the 285-pound division, while Cunningham is No. 6 at the 149-pound weight class and Booth is ranked No. 8 at the 165-pound weight class.
The Cobras return to action on Friday (Jan. 9) for the Coker Duals. The all-day event will feature seven teams from Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. at Coker's DeLoach Center.
