INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Four Cobras remain in contention after the first day of competition at the 36th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis. All four will take to the mat on Sunday (Dec. 14) for day two of the tournament. The top eight in each weight class place.
Travis Laxton, Kevin Thompson, Rashad Cunningham and Luis Peguero have all advanced to day two of the tournament.
Laxton is the only Cobra still in the championship bracket. The 125-pounder was 2-0 on the day with pin and a 7-4 decision. He will wrestle Forrest Glogouski of Lake Erie College in the semifinals.
In the 141-pound division Thompson went 2-1 on the day with an overtime victory and a 10-7 win in the consolation round. He will face Darren Wynn of McKendree University in his first match on Sunday.
Cunningham went 3-1 on Saturday in the 149-pound division with a 4-3 decision, a 2-1 decision and a 38-second pin. On Sunday, he will take on Preston Bowshier from Wheeling Jesuit University in his first match of the day.
Finally, Peguero was 3-1 on the day at the 184-pound weight class with a 2-0 decision, a 7-2 decision and a 4-3 decision. His 4-3 win came against 2013 NCAA runner-up Blake Sorenson of Upper Iowa. On day two, Peguero will face-off against Caleb Riera of Limestone College in his first match of the day.
