Coker Wrestling Heads to Midwest Classic

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker wrestling team will head north this weekend to take part in the 36th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis. The Cobras will join 31 teams representing Divisions II, III and the NAIA from various colleges and university from across the nation at the two-day event beginning on Saturday (Dec. 13) and concluding on Sunday (Dec. 14).

The Cobras will be looking to Travis Laxton, Derrick Nelson, Luis Peguero and Robert Parland to continue their success on the mat. All four wrestlers are seeded in their respective weight classes for the tournament.

Laxton will be the fourth seed at the 125-pound weight class. The senior is 11-2 on the year and is currently ranked No. 5 in Super Region II.

Nelson will be the No. 6 seed in the 133-pound division. The junior is a perfect 6-0 on the year, with four of his six wins by pin. He is currently ranked No. 6 in Super Region II.

Peguero will wrestle at the 184-pound weight class as the No. 8 seed. The freshman is 13-3 on the year with four pins and Parland will be the No. 4 seed at the 197-pound weight class. The sophomore is 16-2 on the year with four pins and he is ranked No. 3 in Super Region II.

Also taking the mat for the Cobras will be Kevin Thompson at the 141-pound division and Rashad Cunningham at the 149-pound weight class. Derek Rothermel, who is ranked No. 3 in Super Region II, will represent the Cobras at the 157-pound weight class and Derrick Booth will take the mat at the 165-pound weight class. Freshman Rocco Hladney will suit up at the 174-pound division and Alex Green, ranked No. 5 in Super Region II, will round out the field for the Cobras at the 285-pound weight class.
