Coker Ranked Seventh in Wrestling Super Region II Preseason Coaches' Poll; Five Cobras Ranked Individually

BELMONT, N.C. - The Coker College wrestling team enters the 2014-15 season ranked seventh in Super Region Two, as released by the region's coaches Friday. Five Cobras are ranked in the top six of their individual weight classes.

"We are very excited to get on the mat and see what we can do this season," said head coach Cy Wainwright. "Being ranked in the top 10 in the region is a great accomplishment, but having five players ranked in the top six in their weight class is even better. It is a testament to the hard work and commitment these guys have put in during the off-season."

Newcomer Travis Laxton earned the No. 5 spot in the 125-poiund division. Laxton, a senior, transferred to Coker from Newberry College where he went 27-10 last season, posting a 15-2 record against region opponents.

Sophomore Kevin Thompson was ranked No. 6 in the 141-pound division. Last season, Thompson earned 24 wins, including a team leading 12 wins by pin. He was also 18-8 versus region opponents.

Junior transfer Derrick Booth was picked No. 3 in the 165-pound weight class. Booth transferred to Coker from North Idaho College where he was a 2014 All-American. He went 25-18 last season finishing sixth at the NJCAA National Championship.

In the 197-pound division, Robert Parland was picked No. 3. The sophomore went 12-16 for the Cobras last season, including posting a 7-11 record against region opponents.

The final Cobra to be ranked individually is Alex Green. A senior, Green is ranked No. 5 in the 285-pound division. Last season he wrestled at the 197-pound weight class posting a 6-6 record.

The Cobras will begin the season on Saturday (Nov.1) at the Citadel Open. The meet is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the Citadel's McAlister Field House and it will run all day. Admission for the event is $5 per person.
