INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – On Saturday (Dec. 14) the Coker Cobra wrestlers opened competition at the 35th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
Austin Akins was the leading wrestler for the Cobras during the first day of the Classic. Competing at the 285-pound division, Akins won his first match of the day by major decision, 16-2, over Derek Morgan of Central Missouri. In his second match, Akins defeated Chris Giddens of UNC Pembroke in the first tiebreaker round, 4-2. Akins third match of the day was the quarterfinal match. Unfortunately for Akins, he lost the match to Trine's Mackenzie Green, 14-8. Dropping to the consolation round, Akins stayed alive in the tournament with a 9-4 win over Tyler Richardson of East Stroudsburg.
The lone pin of the day for the Cobras came from Kevin Thompson at the 149-pound division. Thompson pinned Nicholas Leitten of Limestone in the second consolation round.
