Cobras finish 10th at SAC Championship

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Junior Haylie George and sophomore Daniella Gyoni fired a pair of 78s on Tuesday to help Coker place 10th in the South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship.

The Cobras shot rounds of 328-320-321--969, which was 117-over par on the demanding par-71 Country Club of Salisbury layout. Anderson, ranked 8th nationally in NCAA D-II, romped to its third straight team crown at 289-291-299--879. The Trojans' 27-over par total for three days topped runner-up and 20th-ranked Limestone by 24 shots. Wingate, ranked 17th, along Catawba and Lincoln Memorial, deadlocked for third place at 54-over par. Dilyara Bulambayeva of Lincold Memorial captured medalist honors by one shot at 73-30-75--218 (+5).
"We had several good individual rounds during the tournament," Coker head coach John Hackney said, "but we just had too many big holes and only posted 12 birdies, which just wasn't enough to keep up with the big guns."
Freshman Gisele Morna paced the Cobras during the championships, coming it at 81-73-80--233 (20-over par), good for 31st place of 65 golfers. Gyoni was close behind at 81-78-78--237 to place 39th. Freshman Felicia Sundgren (84-79-85--248), George (83-91-78--252) and senior Mack Taylor Bailey (83-91-93--267) completed the Coker scoring.
"This was a topsy-turvy season for us," Hackney said. "Our ladies won against a pretty good field in the fall at the Converse Invitational and dominated against a small field this spring in the Barton Invitational, where Daniella and Felicia finished as medalist and runner-up, respectively. After setting the school record with a 3-under 69 in the fall, Gisele missed much of the spring with a back injury, but junior Kelly Campman stepped in to fill the void. We had to navigate some other issues along the way, and I am proud of how we stuck together. Aside from golf, I just hope our squad learned some life lessons that will serve them well as they go through life. We wish our lone senior, Mack, all the best!"
