Cobras 11th after Day One of the SAC Invite
SALISBURY, NC -- The Coker women's golf team had a rough start Sunday in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Championships and is in 11th place.
The Cobras fired a score of 44-over par 328 on the par-71 Country Club of Salisbury layout. Nationally 8th-ranked Anderson, the defending SAC champ, has a commanding 13-shot lead over host Catawba and 17th-ranked Wingate after carding a round of 5-over 289. No individual broke par for the day, but Anderson's Kennedy Gooding did shoot an even-par 71. Her teammates, Zoey Iglesias and Aly Francis, are tied for second at +1.
"We just did not play well today, which was disappointing," Coker head coach John Hackney said. "We played a total of 90 holes for our five players and had 46 bogeys, four doubles, and two triples...with only three birdies. But, we have two rounds left, so I hope our ladies will show some mettle and rally to beat some teams ahead of us. We can play so much better, and there is a lot of golf left, so it would be great to see them rise to the occasion for the remainder of the tournament."
Freshman Gisele Morna and sophomore Daniella Gyoni each posted 10-over par rounds of 81 to pace the Cobras. Senior Mack Taylor Bailey and junior Haylie George carded 83s and freshman Felicia Sundgren fired an 84.
The Cobras tee off at 9:15 Monday. The tournament can be followed at www.birdiefire.com.
