Cobras Win Converse Invitational
INMAN, S.C. -- Four Cobras shot between 76 and 78 in cold, breezy conditions Tuesday as the Coker Women's Golf Team captured the championship of the 15-team Converse Fall Invitational.
Playing at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club, the Cobras beat runner-up Catawba by five strokes and Newberry by six to defend their title at this event.
"What a remarkable performance by our ladies!" Coker head coach John Hackney said. "The conditions were tough out there today, but we showed a lot of mettle to claim the title.
"We had the lead for most of the tournament, although there were a lot of teams close to us. We were tied for first with Shorter when we went to bed last night (after playing 32 to 34 holes), but we trailed them by one after finishing round two this morning. The third round was just a battle in these weather conditions, but our ladies were warriors."
Junior Kelly Campman fired 76, freshman Gisele Morna and sophomore Daniella Gyoni shot 77, junior Haylie George carded a 78 and senior Mack Bailey had 81.
Campman shot 1-over on her front nine to spark the Cobras, George eagled No. 4, Gyoni hit 40-of-42 fairways for the week, Bailey hit 11 greens and Morna had three birdies en route to a 7th place finish overall at 72-76-77 (+9).
Gyoni placed 10th at 77-75-77 (+13), George finished at 73-81-78 (+16),  Bailey came in at 76-80-81 (+21) and Campman carded 81-81-76 (+22).
"Our ladies have come a long way," Hackney said. "We are now competitive in all the tournaments we play, and we proved today that we can close the deal and win. What a great way to end a record-breaking fall season!"
